Professional MBA FlexCurriculum

Your program consists of 42 credits total. You’ll begin with 12 core courses taken in a logically progressive sequence. Each class you take prepares you for the next level of knowledge. You’ll finish with two (2) elective courses.

As part of your program, the Professional MBA (PMBA) Flex offers you the opportunity to tailor your MBA experience to your specific interests. You’ll choose two specialized track courses, which would be offered online, from any of the below disciplines:

  • Marketing Channel Strategy - Learn the processes that guide successful omnichannel marketing planning and deployment, as well as how to apply communication and distribution strategies profitably.
  • Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Learn best practices of entrepreneurship, based on theories and concepts, and how to apply them through an emphasis on case studies and group projects. Plus, gain insights into creatively managing the challenges of change and product innovation.
  • Strategic Negotiations - Learn how to plan and control sales operations via detailed case studies. Become acquainted with the art of business negotiating.
  • Finance - Focus on commercial banking and financial markets and gain an understanding of asset and liability management and money market and capital market assets, as well as the functions of financial institutions in the marketplace.
  • Business Analytics - Learn how to conduct both pattern discovery and predictive modeling, as well as studying the recent developments in the MIS field.
  • International Business - Develop an understanding of global business management encompassing financial strategy, international trade, international management practices and international operations.

In addition, you can augment your desired specialty by choosing two additional classes within the same field, a total of four electives, towards a concentration to be posted on your transcripts.

Foundation Courses

As part of the mandatory Professional Development Residency 1, you will attend an Accounting Boot Accelerator. This Accelerator introduces basic accounting concepts or serves as good refresher course to prepare you for the next level of material you will study.

Program Residencies

All students are required to complete Professional Development Residencies (PDR) 1, 2 and 3.

PDRs are offered in an on-campus format. Mandatory PDR 1 during mid-August, allows students to refresh concepts or gain new exposure to them. The sessions includes training in the areas of business communication, career management, technical skills and leadership. PDRs also provide students the space to network with fellow classmates, MBA faculty and staff.

PDR 1 will take place over the course of four days, which includes two business days (Thursday – Sunday). Attendance is mandatory for all students.

For Fall 2018, the dates of PDR 1 are August 16th – August 19th.

Core Classes

ACG 6026 - Accounting for Managers (AC)

Presentation of the nature, techniques and uses of accounting from the perspective of people who manage businesses and investments in businesses. Covers both financial and management accounting.

QMB 6357C - Business Analysis for Decision Making

Review of the relevant quantitative techniques required for business analysis and decision making, including decision models, mathematical programming, statistics and forecasting. This is a WebCT and Excel based course. Prerequisites: College Algebra, computer literacy and working knowledge of Excel.

FIN 6446 - Competitive Strategy

Provision of tools for managerial decision-making in a variety of competitive environments including demand analysis, short- and long-run costs of production, demand for factors, market structure and competitive strategy.

FIN 6406 - Corporate Finance

In-depth examination of asset, liability and capital structure management, with emphasis on valuation capital budgeting techniques; risk evaluation; working capital management; and methods of short-term, intermediate and long-term financing. Prerequisites: ACG 6026 or equivalent.

MAR 6816 - Corporate Simulation

Course emphasis is on application and integration of concepts and tools, through participation in the marketing management of a firm in competition with other firms. The course's focal point is a computerized marketing management simulation. Prerequisites: ACG 6175, FIN 6406, and MAN 6501.

ACG 6175 - Financial Reporting and Analysis

Comprehensive treatment of analysis of financial statements as aid for decision making; looks at current state of financial reporting practices and impact of published statements on economic systems. Prerequisites: ACG 6026, FIN 6406 or equivalent.

BUL 6810 - Legal Environment of Business

Examines current legal, regulatory, ethical, and political issues within the context of public law. Topics include employment, antitrust, administrative, cyberlaw, and contracts and tort.

MAR 6805 - Marketing Management in the Global Environment

Analysis and application of theory and problem solving for marketing management in the global environment. Emphasis will be on the role of marketing in the organization; planning the marketing effort; management of the marketing organization; control of marketing operations; and evaluation of the marketing contribution.

MAN 6501 - Operations Management

This course covers analysis, design, and operations of organizational systems. The systems approach is used to provide a framework or general model of analysis, to which specific concepts, quantitative techniques, and tools can be related. The material presented has application to any organization of people and machines, including hospitals, governmental agencies, service organizations, and industrial concerns. Prerequisites: QMB 6357.

MAN 6245 - Organizational Behavior

Individual, interpersonal, and small group behavior in complex organizations. Focus on behavior, its causes, and management interventions to improve organizational effectiveness. Research methods to study organizational behavior.

MAN 6830 - Organization Information Systems

Introduction to information systems and their role in organizations from a user's viewpoint. Survey and application of the basic concepts necessary for understanding information systems. Study of the main activities in the development cycle used to acquire information systems capability.

Professional Development Seminars will focus on soft skills such as leadership, team building, oral presentation, and career exploration. There will be team-building activities, which include classroom exercises in group decision-making and problem-solving. Challenging outdoor exercises will be included to help participants build the skills they will need to work together in the program, and to succeed in today’s team-based organizations. Students will also work with a presentation skills coach to improve their communication skills that are critical to managerial success. Seminars are mandatory and are non-credit. Learn more here.

MAN 6726 - Strategic Management

The use of cases, guest lectures, and gaming to integrate the analysis and measurement tools, the functional areas and public policy issues. The objective is to develop skill in broad areas of rational decision-making in an administrative context of uncertainty. Should be taken in the last semester of master's program.
